A. The supplement, Wild Pacific Salmon Oil is rich in Astaxanthin, Omega-3 EPA and DHA.  200mg, 1000mg softgels 'Maintains Cardiovascular Health'. Recommended dose 4 softgels a day with food. Created from already harvested salmon, using fish parts otherwise wasted. -conserves fish stock. Regularly tested for chemical residues and heavy metals.  What could be the problem with this? Fish oils I thought were good for you! Wild salmon product from BC shores.

B. On hearing Matt Lederman's talk on supplements, I see how this is not necessarily good thing for me to take.

1. Small study in Austria on 'junk-food vegans' having low DHA readings should not make me run to buy a DHA rich product like Salmon Oil. Obviously Austrians may not eat fish every week like I do, so that and the probability is that the Austrian's Omega 2 and Omega 6 readings were out of balance because they ate lots of oil from the junk food. Omega 3 is a polyunsaturated fat that converts to a saturated fat when consumed in excess.

2. I now know that when many supplements are given free reign from just such skimpy research, it is often found later that the long term effects of taking products like Vit A, beta carotene and Vit E can raise mortality rates. Recommended supplements are going out of favour as new ones are introduced. When in doubt I will not take or recommend supplements to my friends.

 3. Do I have a current health problem. No! Does my biochemistry need manipulating with extra 'nutrients' in the form of supplements of any kind? No!

After today I will lean towards defaulting on
    -no added oils
    -no toxic habits
    -all plant based foods
-take blanket recommendations and experts  opinions with a grain of salt
-a little ground flax seed added to my diet every day will do me just fine!
